The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is an important piece of legislation that is designed to strengthen and unify data protection laws for all individuals within the European Union. The regulation will become effective and enforceable on the 25th May 2018.

You can read an overview and our general approach to GDPR here.

We’ve added a number of features to Optin Cat that will help you be GDPR compliant. Here’s an overview.

Note: None of this is legal advice, so please consult with an attorney in order to achieve GDPR compliance.

Consent Checkbox

Under GDPR, you have to ask for consent, if you use your subscriber’s data for marketing purposes. In practice, this means adding a checkbox to your optin form (alternatively, using double optin in itself may be enough – please consult with an attorney).

Using Optin Cat, you can enable site-wide consent checkboxes for all of your forms. Simply navigate to Settings. Here’s the interface:

Once you’ve turned on the checkbox, your forms will still look exactly like they did before:

Once this form is submitted, your user will see this:

We’ve built this “2-step consent process” because it doesn’t clutter up your forms, and will get you a higher conversion rate.

Here’s how it works. Depending on if your user checks this checkbox, the following will happen.

User doesn’t checkbox, abandons the form:

• Nothing.

User doesn’t checkbox, and hits the call-to-action button again:

• Optin Bait delivery still triggers. (Under GDPR, you can’t prevent your users from receiving an optin bait, even if they don’t want to get email marketing material).
• Consent will be logged as false (see “Consent Tracking” below).
• Email address will not be sent onward to your email provider.

If the user checks the box and hits the “subscribe button” again:

• Optin Bait delivery triggers.
• Consent will be logged as true (see “Consent Tracking” below).
• Email address will be sent onward to your email provider.

Consent Tracking

As of Optin Cat 2.2, we now store a list of all your subscribers that opt-in using Optin Cat, and their consent status. We also store a copy of your consent checkbox’ text at the time of opting in.

To view this table, navigate to Optin Cat -> Subscribers

There are 3 kinds of consent status:

• true (consent given)
• false (consent not given)
• unknown (no consent checkbox was displayed)

Double Optin

Double optin is one way to prove consent. All our email provider integrations support double optin. While double optin may not be required for GDPR compliance (especially if you use a consent checkbox), we’d recommend turning it on.

Data Export & Data Erasure

Under GDPR, you have to erase all user data if requested, and you have to provide all data you have on a user if requested.

Optin Cat integrates with the following WordPress 4.9.6 GDPR features:

• Data export
• Data erasure

This means that if you receive a data erasure or deletion request, you can use WordPress’s default tools. You can learn more here.

It’s called the Success Cookie. In short, what this means is that your subscribed viewers will not be repeatedly pestered by the same pop ups. It’s a great way to make your site more visitor friendly for your faithful viewers while making sure you get your conversions.

Using the Success Cookie:

When enabled, a cookie is added to the browser of any user who successfully subscribes with that form. The cookie will then prevent that form from appearing again for a set amount of time. You can customize the length of time in the targeting options for your forms, and cookies can be set for up to one year.

Comment Optins are a really powerful tool to increase subscriptions. They give your viewers the opportunity to subscribe to your mailing lists anytime they comment on your site.

Once activated they utilize WordPress’s comment’s feature, to add a checkbox giving a subscription option to your comment form. Whether people need to be signed in to comment on your site or leave an email as they comment we will send that email to your mailing list.

Enabling Comment Optins:

1. Go to Optin Cat > Settings > PowerUps in your WordPress dashboard.

2. Enable the toggle for Comment Optins.

3. A new Comment Optin area will appear under Optin Cat. Go there to setup your comment optins.

Setting Up Comment Optins:

1. Enable the comment optin checkbox.

2. Change what will be displayed next to the Comment Optin checkbox.

3. Enable or disable the checkbox as being pre-selected.

4. Choose your email marketing provider.

From here the steps are slightly different for each provider, but the same as how it’s done for individual forms. More details on integrating with each individual provider can be found here:

Instructions:

1. Go to your Dashboard -> Optin Cat -> PowerUps

2. Click the Effects checkbox to enable the feature on your Optin Cat forms.

3. Go to your Optin Cat Popup, Optin Bar, or Slide in or Create a new form.

4. Scroll down to the PowerUps section and select your desired animation.

5. Save your changes by clicking the Save button at the top/bottom of the form editor.

6. View your webpage that has your Popup form to see the animation displayed.

Setting up Optin Bait Delivery

1. In your WordPress backend, go to Optin Cat > Settings and under Power Ups activate Optin Bait Delivery.

2. Go to the optin form that you’d like to activate Optin Bait Delivery for. Each form can have a unique offer.

3. Check “Use Optin Bait Delivery”.

4. Configure Optin Bait Delivery. The “message” field supports replacement patterns. Emails will be sent as raw text.

5. You’re all set. Whenever someone opts into your form, an email will be sent to them.

Optimizing for email deliverability & troubleshooting

Option 1: Sending emails through WordPress (default)

By default, Optin Bait Delivery sends emails using WordPress’ built in email functionality (using the wp_mail() function). On most hosts, email deliverability should be good. For example, WordPress uses this same feature to send password reset emails, and popular shopping carts such as WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads use it to send purchase receipts.

Should you choose this option, it’s recommended you use wordpress@yourdomain.com as the from: email address.

Option 2: Sending emails through a transactional email provider (recommended)

This option is highly recommended for the best email deliverability. Transactional email providers send your emails for you to ensure the best deliverability. The easiest & cheapest options to set up transactional emails for WordPress are Mandrill and Mailgun.

Mandrill

Mandrill uses Mailchimp’s email infrastructure to send emails. We recommend setting up Mandrill for your WordPress site using WPMandrill. Mandrill is free for up to 12,000 emails per month.

Mailgun

Mailgun is another great transactional email provider. We recommend using the Mailgun plugin. Mailgun lets you send 10,000 emails per month for free.

2. Set up Optin Bait Delivery

Method 1:

The easiest way to deliver your Content Upgrade is our “Optin Bait Delivery” feature, which lets you set up unique optin baits for each optin form, to be sent automatically.

Method 2:

With ‘AWeber Tags’, and ‘MailChimp Interest Groups’, you can send your optin bait through your provider, while still adding subscribers to your main lists.

Just add the tag or group to the form, that tells your provider to send the email offer, right away.

Option 1: Display Immediately

In the optin form editor, under ‘Thank You Message’, select ‘Display Immediately. This will enable the Thank You feature which displays on form, without page reload or redirect.

Then just customize the text that will be displayed to viewers upon subscription.

Once you’ve set up AJAX Thank You, your users will see something like this.

Option 2: Redirect

Switch the toggle to ‘Redirect’ If you’d like to use your own custom thank you page. You can redirect to a page on your site or use a URL.

This is a great way to show your appreciation and provide your subscribers with some more details on what they will be receiving.
